Elk vs Intercom Fin: Pricing, Features and Who Each Is For (2026)

Elk vs Intercom Fin compared on pricing models, channels, helpdesk features and setup. A fair look at when Fin is worth it and when a lighter AI agent fits better.

Elk vs Intercom Fin: Pricing, Features and Who Each Is For (2026)

Elk vs Intercom Fin is mostly a question of size. Intercom Fin is the better choice if you have a support team, real ticket volume, and want an AI agent built into a full helpdesk with workflows, SLAs and reporting. Elk is the better choice if you're a founder or small team that wants an AI agent on your website, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Slack for a predictable monthly price, handing off to the helpdesk you already use.

The two products price AI in different ways. Fin charges per outcome. Elk charges a flat plan with message credits. That difference matters more than any single feature, so this comparison starts there. Pricing comes from each official pricing page as of October 4, 2026.

Pricing models compared

Intercom

From Intercom's pricing page:

  • Essential: $29 per seat/month. Shared inbox, ticketing, public help center, Messenger, pre-built reports.
  • Advanced: $85 per seat/month. Adds workflow automation, multiple team inboxes, round-robin assignment, multilingual help center, and 20 free Lite seats.
  • Expert: $132 per seat/month. Adds SSO, HIPAA support, SLAs, multibrand Messenger and help center, and 50 free Lite seats.
  • Fin: $0.99 per outcome, charged once per conversation. Fin can also run standalone on another helpdesk with no seat costs and a minimum monthly commitment (for example, 50 outcomes).

Those seat prices are shown with annual billing. WhatsApp, SMS and phone are billed separately as pay-as-you-go.

Elk

From Elk's pricing, billed annually:

  • Hobby: free, 50 chat credits/month, 1 agent
  • Starter: $16/month, 1,000 credits, 2 agents, all AI models
  • Growth: $80/month, 5,000 credits, 5 team members, auto-retrain, knowledge gap reports
  • Scale: $200/month, 20,000 credits, 20 agents, 10 team members

Each AI reply uses credits based on the model: 1 credit for fast, low-cost models, more for flagship models. Messaging channels are included in the plan.

What the difference means

With Fin, cost scales with resolved conversations. You pay only when Fin helps, which is fair, but your bill grows with your success and changes month to month.

With Elk, cost scales with AI replies. A conversation where the agent sends four replies on a 1-credit model uses four credits. The bill is fixed for the plan until you run out of credits.

A simple way to estimate:

  1. Count the conversations per month you expect the AI to handle.
  2. For Fin, multiply the share it resolves by $0.99. Add seat costs if you use Intercom's helpdesk.
  3. For Elk, multiply conversations by average AI replies per conversation by credits per reply. Then pick the plan that covers it.

Run this with your own numbers. Don't trust a generic "X is cheaper" claim, including ours.

Channels

Elk deploys one agent to a website widget, a shareable link, an iframe, WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, Facebook Messenger and Slack. You connect each from the agent's Integrate tab, and conversations from every channel show up in one Chats view.

Intercom includes live chat, email, in-app chat, banners and tooltips on every plan. WhatsApp, SMS and phone cost extra. Intercom is stronger for in-app messaging in a SaaS product. Elk includes Instagram and WhatsApp without usage fees from Elk, though Meta's own WhatsApp pricing still applies to template messages.

If you want an AI agent on WhatsApp, our guide on connecting an AI agent to WhatsApp covers the setup and Meta's 24-hour rule.

Helpdesk and handoff

This is where Intercom is clearly ahead. Fin sits inside a full helpdesk: a shared inbox, ticketing, assignment rules, workflows, SLAs and reporting. When Fin hands off, the conversation lands in the same inbox your team works from.

Elk isn't a helpdesk. It hands off to one:

  • Intercom Ticket and Zendesk Ticket plugins create a ticket with a subject and a summary of the conversation
  • Slack Notify posts a summary and a link to the chat in a Slack channel when a topic you define comes up
  • Custom Actions call your own API, for example to open a case in your internal system

So you can run Elk in front of Intercom: the AI answers first, and anything it can't solve becomes an Intercom ticket.

Training and answer quality

Both answer from your own content.

Elk trains on websites (crawl a domain, specific links, or a sitemap, up to 500 pages per scrape), files (PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, CSV, Markdown and more), Q&A pairs, articles, and Notion, Google Drive and Dropbox. A knowledge playground shows which chunks the agent retrieves for a query. Growth and above add automatic retraining and knowledge gap reports.

Intercom trains Fin mainly on your Intercom help center articles and other content you connect, and adds procedures for multi-step workflows.

If your help center already lives in Intercom, Fin needs almost no setup. If your knowledge is spread across your website, PDFs and Notion, Elk pulls those in directly.

Model choice

Elk lets you choose the model for each agent on paid plans, from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, Meta, DeepSeek and Moonshot. You can trade cost for quality per agent. Intercom runs Fin on its own model setup, so you don't manage models. That's simpler, but you can't choose.

Who should pick which

Pick Intercom Fin if:

  • You have a support team working in a shared inbox every day
  • You need workflows, SLAs, assignment rules and detailed reporting
  • Your help center is already in Intercom
  • You're comfortable with costs that grow per resolved conversation

Pick Elk if:

  • You're a founder or small team without a dedicated helpdesk, or you're happy with your current one
  • You want WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger on the same agent without channel fees from the AI vendor
  • You prefer a fixed monthly price
  • You want to choose the AI model yourself

Use both if you're on Intercom's helpdesk but want a cheaper or multi-channel AI front line. Elk answers first and creates Intercom tickets for the rest.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Intercom Fin cost?

Intercom lists Fin at $0.99 per outcome. An outcome is counted when the customer confirms the issue is resolved, does not ask for more help after Fin replies, or Fin completes a workflow including a handoff. It is charged once per conversation. If you also use Intercom's helpdesk, seats start at $29 per seat per month billed annually.

Can I use Fin without switching to Intercom's helpdesk?

Yes. Intercom offers Fin standalone on top of other helpdesks such as Salesforce, with no seat costs but a minimum monthly commitment, for example 50 outcomes.

Is Elk cheaper than Intercom Fin?

For most small teams, yes. Elk charges a flat monthly plan with chat credits, starting free and from $16/month billed annually, instead of a per-outcome fee. Whether it is cheaper at your volume depends on how many AI replies each conversation takes and which model you use, so estimate both before deciding.

Does Elk replace a helpdesk like Intercom?

No. Elk is an AI agent, not a full helpdesk. It answers customers and hands off to your existing tools through Zendesk Ticket, Intercom Ticket and Slack Notify plugins. If you need a shared inbox, SLAs and team routing, you still need a helpdesk.

Can Elk create tickets in Intercom?

Yes. Elk's Intercom Ticket plugin lets the agent create an Intercom ticket with the conversation context when it cannot resolve something, so your team can pick it up in Intercom.

Bottom line

Intercom Fin is the right call for teams that need a complete helpdesk and are fine paying per outcome. Elk fits founders and small teams who want a capable AI agent across web and messaging apps at a fixed monthly price, handing off to the tools they already use. If you aren't sure, see how to reduce support tickets with AI to work out how much of your volume an AI agent can realistically handle.
